Rotherham United complete the signing of Simon Lenighan...

Rotherham United have completed the signing of midfielder Simon Lenighan.

The former Leeds United youth team captain has signed a deal until the end of the season after a successful trial period with the club.

The 21-year-old has had short spells in non-league with Harrogate Town and Frickley Athletic, before taking the opportunity to come back into the professional ranks with the Millers.

“He is 6’3”, very athletic and a box-to-box type of player,” boss Neil Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk

“He will give us a physical presence and he can play so it is a great opportunity for him, he has to grasp that opportunity now and make a career of it.”

Lenighan is well known to current boss Redfearn who helped developed him, and a host of other talented youngsters, during his time as Academy Manager at Elland Road.

“Simon was in the group with the likes of Sam Byram, Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt but for whatever reason lost his way at Leeds,” added Redfearn.

“He was on the bench at Leeds and was always someone I wanted to get involved in the first-team during my time there, so for the age he is at he is someone we can make a player of.

“He is someone I have kept an eye on, even before I took the Rotherham job, and I knew if I got back in I would have a look at him. He falls into the category of these top young players that I had at Leeds United and he could be a real steal for us.”

There is a full interview with Neil Redfearn and Simon Lenighan on Millers Player now.
