Steve Evans post Millwall...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans hailed the character of his players after they came from behind to defeat Millwall at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The visitors lead after a first half strike from Martyn Woolford but goals in the second half from Danny Ward and Kari Arnason secured a vital three points and moved the Millers six points clear of the Lions in the Championship table.

“There was a lot of character shown there wasn’t there?, said a delighted Steve Evans after the game.

“We were in the ascendancy before the goal and then we were in the ascendancy again but had to rely on our goalkeeper to save a one-on-one otherwise we would have been 2-0 down. That was hard to take given the amount of the play that we had.

“We got them in at half-time and they were feeling a little sorry for themselves but I told them to relax, I’ll stand in front of you whatever happens today. We needed to get out and get on the front foot, like we did in the first half; I thought our performance was good in the first half.  It obviously helped that we got the goal early in the second half, and it would have been a travesty if we hadn’t gone on and beat them because we have laid siege to their goal. We then had a shot off the post and it comes back out, then one off the line, we had a couple of penalty shouts too. We got the goal from a set play routine which we have worked on for around two hours yesterday which worked for us at a vital time. Our only focus now is preparing for the match against Cardiff on Tuesday back here at the AESSEAL New York.”

Goalkeeper Adam Collin made a crucial save from Lee Gregory in the first half to keep the scoreline at 0-1, then Arnason headed the winner in the second period, both come in for huge praise from Evans.

“The two players who will probably be on record for helping us the most today, were involved in mistakes on Tuesday,” Evans added.

“How do you make up for it? You go out there again and try and prove a point. We don’t hammer people here for making mistakes as long as they learn from it, and those lads really stood up today. It was a fantastic header from Kari Arnason, he has put it in with some real power.

“We don’t kid ourselves; this is nothing more than three points. Nothing has been settled today in any shape or form, I would have been saying that if it had gone against us today.”
