South Yorkshire Police officers aim to deliver a safe, enjoyable environment when Rotherham United meet Millwall FC at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on 28 February.

The Championship teams will take to the pitch in Rotherham at 3pm on Saturday, and fans should expect a welcoming and reassuring police presence, which is prepared to react and deal with any disorder that may occur, says Match Commander, Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth.

More than 10,000 supporters are expected to attend the game at the AESSEAL New York Stadium, on New York Way, with 1,300 Millwall fans predicted to arrive from London and advised by the licensee of the Bridge Inn that they will be able to benefit from increased capacity at the premises.

Chief Inspector Butterworth, who is overseeing the policing of the match, said: “Welcoming fans while preventing crime and disorder is a key focus. We aim to deliver a safe, enjoyable environment for fans, the public and those going about daily business.

“We hope those attending the game have a pleasant time and that there is minimal disruption. No level of violence or disorder will be tolerated, and we will have the resources in place to deal with any issues that do occur.

“I would advise all fans to plan their route to the game and leave plenty of journey time, due to an inevitable increase in traffic in the area.”

Rotherham United and South Yorkshire Police have been liaising with Millwall FC and their supporters’ clubs to ensure this an enjoyable and safe fixture.

Paul Davis, stadium manager for Rotherham United, said: “‘Rotherham United would like to welcome Lions fans to the AESSEAL New York Stadium for the first time in what is likely to be an exciting encounter for both sets of supporters.

“Turnstiles will open at 1.30pm and kiosks will be open to serve a full range of refreshments. Please note that there are no ticket sales on the day so all tickets must be purchased in advance from Millwall FC.”

A spokesman for Millwall FC said: “We welcome the positive approach from South Yorkshire Police and in particular their contribution in maintaining the 3pm kick-off time and ensuring the most convenient travel arrangements for both sets of fans.
“We look forward to a cracking match and to enjoying the facilities at Rotherham’s new stadium for the first time.”

South Yorkshire Police will communicate with Rotherham United and Millwall FC fans via social media both before and during the match, advising on turnstile opening times, transport options, refreshments, and any issues that may occur.
