Steve Evans post AFC Bournemouth...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans hailed the resilience of his team after substitute Jordan Bowery netted with a late header to earn a point at Bournemouth.

The Millers trailed to a Steve Cook header for much of the second half but with the game in injury time, Bowery stooped to head in Paul Taylor’s corner to earn Evans’ side a share of the spoils.

“Bournemouth are a fantastic team, we knew we would have to try and restrict them,” said Evans after the game.

“We said to the players that at 70 minutes we would have a different strategy, with a different game plan and different personnel, and we almost got to that point. Unfortunately we switched off and if you switch off at this level you give them a chance, and they put it away.

“I think we created good chances, Matt Derbyshire came on and looked lively for the last 20 minutes and we looked like scoring and when you score as late as that you are always pleased.

“There is no team in The Championship that come here and have possession. We knew at times today that we wouldn’t have a lot of the ball, so we had to have a real shape and structure about our team. I think we had that, and when you see Bournemouth forced into playing long balls from the back then you know that you have got your shape and your team right.”

Evans also praised the Millers team spirit after Bowery headed in his first ever goal for the club after a firm connection from Taylor’s centre.

“He (Bowery) got a couple in the closed door game in the week, and you could see what that goal meant to the team,” he added.

“You see him running to the bench, and the reaction from the bench. He’s replaced a player who is the first to get up and congratulate him. That’s the spirit we have got in the camp.”
