The Millers’ Academy returned to winning ways after their blip against Grimsby Town in style, as they put York City to the sword, winning 4-0 at Roundwood.

Garreth Barker’s youngsters had their hopes of lifting the Youth Alliance League title dented in defeat to the Mariners, but put themselves right back on track to stay in touch with the division’s leaders with a classy victory over the Minstermen.

Ben Wiles’ brace alongside goals from attacking duo Joshua Kayode and Akeel Francis ensured a comfortable win for the Academy, with Barker pleased to finally have a full squad to select from after a season hampered by injuries.

“It was an interesting game because for the first time this season, the whole squad with the exception of one player was available,” he explained.

“If we don't manage to get top spot and come second, it will be the highest that the Youth Team has finished for 10 or 12 season and I think that's great,” he told the official matchday programme.

“It was a very good performance from everyone that featured including Jake Cooper and some of the other first year scholars.

“Unfortunately, Tom Maguire broke his leg last week but Rev James was available to go on the bench after he'd missed nearly six months of football and Akeel Francis was back.

“We were delighted to score as late as the 92nd minute because it shows that you've got players busting a gut right until the end of the game, showing that work rate and desire that we want here at Rotherham United."
