The Millers initially signed midfielder Richie Smallwood on loan from Championship side Middlesbrough for the second half of the 2013/14 season, and after being on the losing side only twice, he was an obvious target for a permanent deal.

It didn't happen after the first enquiries, but eventually, the tough-tackling midfielder was given his chance to move and didn't hesitate in returning to AESSEAL New York Stadium. Before arriving at for his first spell the all action midfielder had made 13 appearances in the Championship, but joined the Millers seeking regular first-team football.

He made his debut for the club in the 2-2 draw with Crawley Town and put in a sterling performance during the last gasp 2-1 victory over Carlisle United at Brunton Park. He capped a wonderful loan spell with his finest moment for the Millers in the play-off final at Wembley, where he didn't only put in a sensational performance over the 90 minutes, but also netted what proved to be the deciding penalty kick.

He made his permanent move to Rotherham in August 2014 and made his debut in a home defeat to Watford, going on to play a pivotal role in the Millers’ survival campaign. He scored his only goal in a 3-3 draw with Derby and ended the campaign with a richly deserved Player of the Year accolade. Richie made his professional debut for Boro in 2010 and had passed 50 appearances for his only club until his arrival at NYS.

Last season Smallwood was again a mainstay in the engine room, making 45 appearances in all competitions as the Millers again defied the odds to stay in The Championship.

During the 2016/17 campaign he enjoyed a loan spell with Scunthorpe United, making 19 appearances before being recalled in January.
