Millers sign Stephen Kelly...

Rotherham United have completed the signing of former Premier League defender Stephen Kelly on a deal until the end of the season, subject to FA and Football League ratification.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender has been training with the Millers over the last fortnight, and he earned himself a permanent deal following some impressive performances in behind closed doors fixtures.

The 32-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience following spells with Birmingham City, Fulham and latterly Reading.

“Stephen is obviously a vastly experienced player,” Redfearn told www.themillers.co.uk

“He has played many times for his country and has played at good levels in the Premier League and The Championship. He is a fit lad, he has looked after himself well and he is a great addition for us.”

Kelly joins his Republic of Ireland team mate Leon Best in committing his future to the Millers after the former Newcastle striker put pen-to-paper yesterday.

The defender played 15 times in The Championship last season for Reading before leaving the Royals after three-years with the club.

“What we have been short of are players that have played at this level with the right experience,” Redfearn continued.

“I said from the beginning that our lads might need some help, and these are the type of players that will come in and help.

“What we are bringing in now are players who will make a difference, they will give the boys a lift during an important time when we need that boost.”

Redfearn also pointed towards Kelly’s versatility with the Dublin-born ace accomplished in a number of roles across the backline.

“He can play anywhere across the back four,” he confirmed.

“He played in a central role in the behind closed door games and that’s where we will probably utilise him to begin with, but he is very versatile. He has got pace, he is very athletic and he has a good height for a defender and he uses the ball well."
