Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the capture of Portsmouth's promotion-winning defender Joe Rafferty, who will officially finalise his move to AESSEAL New York Stadium upon the expiration of his contract at Fratton Park, subject to EFL and FA ratification.

The 30-year-old arrives in South Yorkshire on the back of a highly-successful spell with Pompey where he made 40-plus appearances and helped the club to the Sky Bet League One title in 2023/24.

The former Rochdale and Preston North End full-back is the latest to have a deal promptly wrapped up by Millers boss Steve Evans, who has tied the 30-year-old down to a two-year contract at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Liverpool-born operator was an integral cog in the Portsmouth rearguard which made up one of the meanest defences in the third tier as they claimed the League One title at the end of the last campaign.

Rafferty follows Jonson Clarke-Harris through the door as another of Evans’ early recruits with the Millers manager having alluded to at least one more signing being close in the early part of this week.

Reaction from Joe will be available to watch on www.themillers.co.uk later today.

Millers boss Steve Evans has met with several transfer targets at AESSEAL New York Stadium throughout the course of the day and is hopeful to confirm the arrival of another signing pending the results of a medical either later this evening or tomorrow.
