Rotherham United can confirm that a deal has been finalised which will see goalkeeper Viktor Johansson join Stoke City for an undisclosed fee when the Summer Transfer Window reopens on Friday 14th June 2024 – subject to EFL and FA ratification.

The Potters submitted an offer which met the undisclosed figure required to trigger the release clause in the Swede’s contract and the Staffordshire-club have since successfully negotiated personal terms with the highly-sought-after goalkeeper, who will officially become a Stoke player when the transfer window reopens in mid-June.

Johansson’s immeasurable popularity here in South Yorkshire was garnered across 144 first team appearances following his arrival on a free transfer in September 2020 and culminated in him receiving the club’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year trophies for two consecutive seasons.

Not only does his time spent with Rotherham United boast a countless number of Man of the Match performances, the 25-year-old can also call upon a significant contribution to promotion to the Sky Bet Championship with the Millers in 2021/22 and an even greater impact between the sticks as the club retained their second tier status a season later.

His near-four-year stay in Rotherham saw him become as well-respected off the pitch as on it, with Johansson the person embodying all the character traits of a Millers player committed to the town and community away from match action.

The Swede’s name will undoubtedly be mentioned among the finest goalkeepers – of which the club has been lucky enough to have many throughout its history – ever to play for Rotherham United and there is a universal feeling shared throughout the club and its supporters that he departs AESSEAL New York Stadium with our sadness, but wholehearted best wishes for a well-earned opportunity to further his career.
