Millers Head Coach Leam Richardson was visibly disappointed by the nature of their heavy defeat at the hands of Coventry City in his post-match assessment.

The Millers had a first half to forget at the CBS Arena as Coventry raced into a four-goal interval lead with Ellis Simms notching a hat-trick. Richardson’s side made a better fist of it in the second 45 but the game was long gone.

“We have come and been well beaten tonight. You can defend footballers for as long as you can and I always will. That’s the worst 45 minutes that I’ve been involved in. You can accept mistakes from Viktor (Johansson). He’s had an outstanding season.

“You can’t start games like this in the Championship. It was very soft to concede three or four goals through the middle of our goal. They were avoidable and not acceptable. We are very aware of the situation we are in.

“At this level, you have got to be really careful to open yourself up to nights like this because the level is too big. If we are not 100 percent, we will find ourselves on the back of things like this and it’s the first time I’ve experienced it during my time with the club.

“You can make excuses for everybody but I’ll take the full blame for it. When you are trying to fix and mend and put players in positions where they are not really playing, then I’ll take it on my shoulders, because I’m the man at the front of it.

“I’ll always back myself to move football clubs forward as I’ve done it in the past. I don’t shy away from any challenge.”
