AWARDS | Magic Man's colossal nine-year contribution celebrated with Special Recognition Award

Rotherham United marked the contribution of long-serving club captain Richard Wood with a Special Recognition Award at Friday night’s 2022/23 Season Dinner.

The legendary skipper has been a colossus for the Millers since joining in 2014 and has enjoyed countless special days with Rotherham United, many of which he has played a pivotal role in helping the club to achieving.

Alongside the numerous promotions during his near-decade-long stint at AESSEAL New York Stadium, the now 37-year-old added another Sky Bet Championship survival to his decorated CV with the club this season as he captained the team to the Bank Holiday 1-0 win over Middlesbrough which mathematically confirmed his side’s place in the division for next season.

Without doubt, the jewel in the crown of Wood’s achievements with the Millers was his Play-off final winning brace of goals against Shrewsbury Town at Wembley in 2017/18, which saw the club return to the second tier at the first time of asking under then-boss Paul Warne.

Throughout his time in South Yorkshire the affectionately dubbed ‘Magic Man’ has been a true professional both on the pitch and off it, setting a shining example to players at the training ground and out in the community.

A scorer of important goals and ever-dependable player when it has come to rising to the big occasions, Wood has become immensely popular with the club’s supporters, staff and his fellow teammates.

The club were honoured to commemorate an outstanding nine years of service from a player that will forever be considered a Rotherham United legend with the Special Recognition Award, which Wood was presented by an equally legendary figure in John Breckin on Friday night.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to join John in congratulating Richard on his incredible contribution to the football club as he receives this award.
