Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the permanent signing of defender Tyler Blackett, who joins the club on a deal until the end of the 2022/23 campaign, subject to EFL and FA ratification and international clearance.

Millers boss Matt Taylor moved quickly to tie up a deal for the former Manchester United operator following a number of key injuries at the heart of the defence and has managed to complete a short-term deal for a player that the club had shown interest in during the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old has been a free agent since the MLS season finished, having enjoyed a stint with Cincinnati FC from August 2021.

The centre back has bags of Sky Bet Championship experience on his CV with over 100 appearances in Reading colours being followed by a stay with Nottingham Forest.

Blackett’s formative years in football saw him work his way through the esteemed Manchester United Academy, where he won the FA Youth Cup before graduating to first team level. The Manchester-born operator would go on to represent the Red Devils 11 times, whilst also enjoying loan switches to Blackpool, Birmingham City and Celtic before his departure in 2016.

The defender has also been recognised up to U21 level with England having made a host of appearances for the Three Lions’ younger age groups throughout his fledgling years.

Blackett arrives in South Yorkshire in time for this weekend’s trip to one of his old clubs Birmingham City this weekend and bolsters the Millers defence, which has been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks with Sean Morrison and Grant Hall – to name just two – sidelined for lengthy periods.

He attended the game against Queens Park Rangers as a guest of the club at the weekend and watched his new teammates record an important Sky Bet Championship victory at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Blackett will wear the number 42 shirt during his time in a Millers shirt.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to welcome Tyler to the club and wish him all the best for his time at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
