READ | Millers pledge support to 'Walk for Rio' fundraiser

Rotherham United will join clubs across South Yorkshire in a sponsored walk to support 4-year-old Rio Spurr and his battle against a rare form of kidney cancer.

Some fans may recognise the Spurr name, as Rio is the son of former Sheffield Wednesday and Doncaster Rovers defender Tommy Spurr.

Rivalries are to be put aside as Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, Doncaster Rovers and Barnsley will join the Millers in the 60-mile walk that will take in a stop at each respective club's ground, concluding at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on the 7th of April in time to see Rotherham United entertain West Bromwich Albion.

The 20-hour walk is the latest fundraising event in a string of remarkable efforts, including celebrity charity football matches, raffle giveaways, auctions and much more in support of Rio.

Members of the Rotherham United Community Sports Trust will be representing the Millers for the walk.

Here’s what one committed member of the RUSCT, Sam Parkin, had to say:

“We wanted to do something special to support Rio and his family.

“We are not just wanting to raise the much-needed funds for Rio’s treatment but also increase awareness around this horrible disease.

“I met Tommy whilst I was working at Doncaster Rovers Foundation, he did so much for us and would always give up his time to help others.

“It’s only right that when one of football’s own needs some support we all come together through the power of the badge to do just that”
