England U19s ramped up their UEFA European U19s Championship preparations on Wednesday night with a 1-0 win over Hungary at Walsall’s Bescot Stadium meaning that they will arrive in Rotherham for Saturday’s game against Iceland at AESSEAL New York Stadium as the table-toppers of Group G.

A solitary Charlie Webster goal proved the difference as the U19s beat Hungary 1-0 – a nation who had proven a thorn in the side of the senior side last time out – in midweek to set up an exciting clash with Iceland this weekend.

Ian Foster’s youngsters played the last half an hour of the Wednesday meeting with Hungary against 10 men after Zsombor Gruber was given his marching orders in the 57th minute.

Hopes around England’s qualification were high ahead of this round of fixtures and will remain that way as the head for South Yorkshire and the Millers’ AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday.

Supporters attending will have the opportunity to see the next generation of England players in action with a number already impressing their senior managers at their respective clubs.

Stockport-born midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is highly-rated by Erik Ten Hag with Manchester United for whom he made his senior debut in February of this year, while 18-year-old left back Lewis Hall has made five first team appearances for Chelsea.

The tournament offers England’s next generation the opportunity to defend their European U19 Championship having lifted the trophy in 2022.

Foster’s side return to Rotherham this weekend – where the Young Lions have enjoyed great success across the age groups – as they welcome Iceland in Group G with tickets still on sale for any supporters wishing to see the country’s young guns in action.
