Rotherham United are delighted to confirm the capture of midfielder Cafu, who arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium on a one year deal, following the expiration of his contract at Premier League side Nottingham Forest. The move is subject to ratification from the FA and EFL.

The defensive midfielder arrives in South Yorkshire as Matt Taylor’s third summer signing, as the Millers continue to strengthen ahead of the upcoming 2023/24 Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Cafu began his career in his native Portugal, coming through the ranks at Benfica before going on to sign for Vitoria Guimaraes where he got his first taste of continental football, in the shape of the UEFA Europa League.

The 30-year-old then moved across Europe to France, enjoying spells with Lorient and Metz between 2016 and 2019. His next challenge would be with Legia Warsaw, in which he helped them win the Polish League title in 2017/18, before scoring the winning goal in the Polish Cup Final against Arka Gdynia.

More silverware would soon follow when he joined Olympiacos in February 2020, helping the Greek side to league title success, as well as getting his hands on the Greek Cup. With 13 appearances in the Europa League and Champions League to his name, as well as 27 caps for Portugal at various youth levels, Cafu first arrived on English shores in 2020/21, when he joined Nottingham Forest.

Initially signing on loan before making the switch permanent, he helped the Reds win promotion to the Premier League for the first time in over two decades during the 2021/22 campaign, before going on to appear in the Premier League.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to welcome Cafu to the football club and wish him all the best during his time at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
