Rotherham United are delighted to confirm experienced defender Sean Morrison as our first signing of the January transfer window, subject to EFL and FA ratification and international clearance.

The former Cardiff City operator joins following his departure from South Wales on a short-term permanent deal until the end of the 2022/23 season to bolster the ranks of Matt Taylor’s squad, bringing with him an abundance of experience at Sky Bet Championship level as well as two seasons in the Premier League with the Bluebirds and Reading respectively.

Now 32, Morrison has amassed just shy of 400 combined EFL and Premier League appearances and alongside a near-10-year stint with the Bluebirds, he has enjoyed spells with the likes of Swindon Town, Reading and Huddersfield Town.

The Plymouth-born centre back boasts a decorated CV which includes time as captain whilst with Cardiff, where he played a key role in promotion to the top flight, whilst also landing the accolade of being their Player of the Year for the 2017/18 campaign.

He began his footballing journey with Swindon having progressed through the club’s Academy setup to graduate to senior level and he was quick to establish himself at the County Ground, where he was named the club’s Young Player of the Season in just his second year in professional football.

Morrison has been a regular performer – particularly over the last 10 years of his career – turning out a minimum of 30 times each season from 2014/15 until he picked up a long-term injury in February 2022.

Now fully-rehabilitated, the former Cardiff favourite arrives in South Yorkshire chomping at the bit to get back to second tier action and could do that as soon as this Saturday when the Millers welcome Blackburn Rovers to AESSEAL New York Stadium, should he be selected.

Sean will wear the number 23 shirt during his time with Rotherham United.

Everyone at the club would like to welcome Sean to South Yorkshire and wish him all the best for his time as a Millers player.

Rotherham United Manager Matt Taylor told www.themillers.co.uk:

"Everyone at Rotherham United is looking forward to working with someone with such fantastic experience.

"Sean will be a welcome addition to the group and will add huge value both on and off the pitch. He will go straight in contention to feature this weekend against Blackburn Rovers."
