Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that first team goalkeeper Viktor Johansson has penned a new contract, which will keep him at AESSEAL New York Stadium until the summer of 2025, subject to ratification from the EFL and FA.

The Swede’s contract was set to expire in the summer of 2023 and talks have subsequently been ongoing for a number of weeks with the players and his representatives, with the Millers keen to tie down one of their key assets for the long-term future.

Johansson’s performances this season have understandably seen him draw acclaim from across the footballing pyramid but the club have acted quickly to secure his signature prior to any concrete offers being made for his services in the January transfer window.

Johansson is one of a number of players that Manager Matt Taylor and Head of Recruitment Rob Scott have been in conversation with regarding extending their stays at AESSEAL New York Stadium beyond the current campaign and we are pleased to confirm that their hard work has paid off, with the Swede agreeing new terms with the club.

The deal represents a significant commitment from both parties as work continues both on and off the field to give Taylor and his Millers side the best possible opportunity of retaining their Sky Bet Championship status this term.

The 24-year-old stopper has established himself as a fans’ favourite since arriving in South Yorkshire following the expiration of his deal with Leicester City in the summer of 2020. Having earned his place between the sticks in the Sky Bet Championship in November the same year turning in a number of accomplished displays.

Viktor was then part of a goalkeeping department which kept a club-record tally of 27 clean sheets across the Papa Johns Trophy and Sky Bet League One promotion winning campaign in 2021/22.

The Swedish stopper has been ever-present in the Sky Bet Championship this term, with 25 appearances to his name and has been rewarded for his fine form with a deal which will run until the summer of 2025.

Millers boss Matt Taylor said:

“I’m delighted, we’ve been working really hard behind the scenes on several players and now, one of our Players of the Season to date has agreed to sign a new long-term contract.

“It is great news for myself as manager, for the fans and for Viktor as well, it is a great reward for his performances.

“It is a sign of intent from the football club. We want to keep hold of our better performers and we want to start building a team around a consistent player, because he’s been outstanding.”
