Rotherham United midfielder Ollie Rathbone has been voted your Mattress Online Man of the Match following the club’s victory over Morecambe on Tuesday night, which ensured their safe passage into Round Two of this season’s Carabao Cup competition.
The Millers were made to work hard to progress by their Sky Bet League Two opponents, who took the lead in the clash at AESSEAL New York Stadium before Joshua Kayode restored parity at 1-1. A closely-contested 90 minutes and stoppage time wasn’t enough to separate the two sides, who needed a penalty shootout to decide the victors.
Goalkeeper Dillon Phillps was the hero of the spot kicks as he saved two and the Millers converted all four of their penalties to ensure their name will be in the hat for tonight’s draw.
As Millers fans have come to expect from the evergreen Rathbone, it was another all-action performance in the engine room which often saw him as his side’s main creative influence.
A number of neat touches and bursts from midfield caught the eye alongside his usual levels of industry that carried him around almost every blade of the AESSEAL New York Stadium turf.
Rathbone won the award with 39.7% of the 496 votes cast following full-time, fending off competition from Cohen Bramall, Cameron Humphreys and Jamie McCart to land the prize.
