Rotherham United Manager Matt Taylor has confirmed that defender Sean Morrison is the club’s new captain for the 2023/24 campaign.

Morrison arrived at AESSEAL New York Stadium in January and has since become a popular and well-respected member of the squad.

The experienced centre half boasts a wealth of Sky Bet Championship experience and can call upon an understand of the level above having spent time in the Premier League, where he skippered Cardiff City and will no doubt prove to an influential figure in the dressing room once again as the Millers look towards another campaign at second tier level.

Morrison replaces long-serving former club captain Richard Wood, who ended his nine-year stay at AESSEAL New York Stadium in the summer, following the expiration of his contract.

The manager also revealed that midfielder Ollie Rathbone will be the new vice-captain up at Roundwood.

The 26-year-old signed for the Millers in the summer of 2021 from Rochdale for an undisclosed fee. He made 41 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring five times.

"It was the natural decision to make because he's such a good, natural leader," Taylor told www.themillers.co.uk.

"Sean is a fantastic person and I'm really pleased that we've been able to get him to stay around. Of course, I want his main focus to be concentrating on staying fit and getting out on that football pitch - as I do with everyone - but he is someone who is highly respected in the dressing room and the ideal choice."

"Ollie Rathbone will be vice-captain, so they will share the armband depending on who is on the pitch at that time. We've got a good core group of players who have been captains and vice-captains themselves, with a lot of experience between them. There's some good minds in there and it is a really good balance.

"In terms of Sean, we were really impressed with him when he came in. Firstly for his performances on the pitch before his unfortunate setback. It was a big disapointment for him, but he didn't let it show.

"He was great with the lads when he wasn't out on the pitch, which can be really challenging as sometimes, as a leader, that is a hard thing to do.

"Sometimes, when you feel like you can't put your body on the line, you feel like you've lost a bit of your identity, but his hard work in the gym and how he was around the place was recognised by everyone here, whether that be players or staff.

"I'm really pleased that he's fit again, because he is an excellent influence on this group and I'm sure he'll be a fantastic captain."
