There were Mattress Online Man of the Match award pick-ups for a duo of defenders over the Easter weekend with Leo Hjelde and Cameron Humphreys landing the prizes for their performances against West Bromwich Albion and Norwich City respectively.

Matt Taylor’s men kicked the weekend off with a superb showing against the Baggies at AESSEAL New York Stadium which saw them run out deserved 3-1 winners before they followed it up with a different – but equally impressive – performance which saw them stand firm at Carrow Road against another Play-off-chasing side in Norwich City.

Left back Leo Hjelde – on loan from Leeds United – was the pick of the bunch from the game in South Yorkshire with a performance which belied his tender years in defence, but it was a closely-contested vote with a number of players starring in the win.

Jordan Hugill, who helped himself to a brace against his former club finished as runner-up in the Man of the Match poll with his 42.3% of the votes finishing closely behind Hjelde who garnered 49.2% of the 2,137 votes cast. Also nominated were Tariqe Fosu and Jamie Lindsay.

Attentions then turned to the clash at Carrow Road where the Millers put on an incredibly resilient display to nullify the wealth of attacking threats at the Canaries’ disposal. It wasn’t just a ‘backs-to-the-wall’ performance from Taylor’s side, who came close to breaking the deadlock themselves when Fosu fired over from close range after a Jamie Lindsay cross, but it was a game which required the visitors to be rocksteady at the back and they didn’t disappoint.

Honourable mentions must go to everyone involved in the shutout – particularly goalkeeper Josh Vickers who was thrown back into the action following an injury to Viktor Johansson in training the day before for his first league appearance of the season – but it was former Manchester City defender Humphreys who was voted as the standout performer at the heart of the rearguard.

A series of important headers and blocks were just part of the reason that the central defender landed the award in what proved to be another composed and assured display from him in Rotherham United colours.

Humphreys won the vote with 42.3% of the 835 votes cast, with Wes Harding, Josh Vickers and Conor Coventry also nominated following the point on the road in Norfolk.
