There's almost nothing Richard Wood wouldn't do for Rotherham United.

The long-serving club skipper is already a firm fans’ favourites for his service to the Millers and following the departure of Paul Warne and his coaching staff, the captain has been asked to assist with first team matters at Roundwood, alongside fellow senior pro, Lee Peltier.

The players returned to training today following an extended period away from the club's training base following the international break and Wood stressed he was left feeling positive following today’s session.

“We were in nice and early, there was a lot of planning and organisation to do, but I really enjoyed it,” Wood told www.themillers.co.uk.

“Of course I’m used to everything being planned out for us in terms of a schedule, so it was a bit different being the one helping to set that all out.

“I think it went well and I hope the lads enjoyed it too, now we’ve got to focus on getting ready for tomorrow.

“As captain, when I’m playing I’m watching all the lads are doing anyway, so naturally I’m keeping an eye of performances.

“I think that will help, because the things you have to look out for, I feel like I already am. In training I feel like I was just as vocal as I always am, just trying to ensure that the lads have got a good tempo and trying to encourage everyone."

“Pelts was there taking the sessions as well and obviously the lads have a lot of respect for him, so it all went well.”

The Millers sit eighth in the Sky Bet Championship standings heading into Saturday’s home fixture with Wigan Athletic at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

Having been impressed with the effort and application of the lads earlier today, the captain admits he’s looking forward to the week ahead.

“We’re doing well, playing well and confidence is high. The lads were brilliant in the session and why wouldn’t they be? We’ve just had a nice long break and we’re flying high in the league, the lads are all chomping at the bit."

“It’s a privilege to have been asked and it is a huge honour to do it. Coaching is something I want to progress into anyway after playing and I’ve really enjoyed the last few days.

“There’s obviously a long way to go and our main focus is just taking it one day at a time. I’ve been here a long time and it has been really nice how the lads have taken to it.

“We’ve got a fantastic group here, they respect me and I respect them. We're all going to work hard for each and our main focus is on Saturday."

Richard Wood

“It’s a fresh start for everyone, the main thing is that we’re doing really well. Usually when a manager leaves it is because of poor form but that isn’t the case here.

“We’re doing well in the league and we’re full of confidence, it’s a good place to be and we’ve just looked to continue what we've been doing.”
