Everyone at Rotherham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former player Dave Smith, aged 74.

Dave represented the Millers between 1978 and 1980 having joined from Lincoln City - where he had become a club legend - and made his debut as his new side thrashed Hartlepool 5-0 in the opening round of the League Cup in August.

Primarily a left-sided player, his time at Millmoor saw him deployed both out wide on the left and tucked just inside with his crossing ability an asset to Millers outfits that enjoyed good runs in both the FA and League cups.

He came close to etching his name into Rotherham United folklore in a third round League Cup game at Manchester City but was unable to convert a last minute chance as the game ended in a goalless draw.

The former England schoolboy international would turn out 42 times in total and score three goals whilst contracted at Millmoor before he departed in May of 1980.

The Thornaby-born man really made his name in the game at Lincoln City, where he became a legend as one of the few players to make over 400 appearances for the Imps, across a decade of football in their club colours.

Dave also represented Middlesbrough in the infancy of his senior career and would wind his footballing days down by playing Sunday League football following his departure from Millmoor.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to all of Dave’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

Once a Miller, Always a Miller.
