Rotherham United are delighted to welcome Matt Taylor as the club’s new first team manager.

Talks with the 40-year-old and his representatives have been ongoing since the Millers were granted permission to speak with them by Exeter City and we are thrilled to confirm that those talks have been successful, with Taylor joining the club with immediate effect.

Taylor arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium alongside assistant Wayne Carlisle on a contract which will run until 2026, with both completing switches from the South West to form Rotherham United’s brand new coaching staff.

The pair have met the squad and staff at Roundwood and are now preparing to take charge of their first Sky Bet Championship fixture against Millwall on Wednesday night.

The Chorley-born boss arrives in South Yorkshire on the back of a highly-successful spell with his previous employers, where he was appointed as the manager of the club that he had captained in 2007 ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.

Taylor wasted no time in hitting the ground running with the Grecians as he was nominated for the EFL League Two Manager of the Month award for August. An encouraging first season in charge would end with his side missing out on the Play-offs by a solitary point but the more was to come a season later.

August of 2019 would against see Taylor’s name among the nominations for the League Two Manager of the Month gong, which this time would see him land the prize – providing further evidence of his progression on his managerial journey.

It was clear by this time that the project that Taylor had undertaken at St. James Park was taking shape and the foundations which he had laid in the early stages of his managerial tenure were providing a solid platform on which to build.

That labour would bear fruit in his fourth season in charge when he would lead his Exeter charges to a long-awaited promotion from League Two, after a superb season which resulted in the Grecian’s claiming second spot and a place in the third tier.

Taylor has been identified as the young, ambitious and intelligent manager that the Millers’ Board were looking for and not only does he boast those credentials, he also has form for following a long-term occupant of a managerial post. The 40-year-old was the man tasked with creating a new legacy at Exeter City following the departure of Paul Tisdale and therefore is well-placed to take up the mantle following Paul Warne’s exit from AESSEAL New York Stadium.
