A cult hero – whose portfolio of important goals keeps growing for Rotherham United. Yep, you guessed it, Georgie Kelly is the Mattress Online Man of the Match following yet more heroics, this time in the Yorkshire derby win over Huddersfield Town at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
Introduced as a substitute by new Millers boss Matt Taylor, the Irishman made an almost-immediate impact as he stole in at the back post to finish off a Dan Barlaser cross and restore Rotherham United’s advantage at 2-1 – a lead which they would hold onto for three more crucial Sky Bet Championship points.
Kelly himself admitted after the game that he still doesn’t ‘feel’ quite like a second tier player having made the switch from part-time football in Ireland last season, but he is doing himself absolutely no harm in endearing himself to the Rotherham United fans with his committed approach, which has already seen him net some iconic goals.
Taylor’s first win as Millers manager was earned through hard work and organisation, but his side did show flashes of real quality and a professionalism to hold onto their lead and record all three points.
It was another tough shortlist to create following this one after a brilliant team performance, but it was Barlaser, Ollie Rathbone and Conor Washington nominated alongside the man hungry for goals.
Kelly prevailed as the winner of the vote with 47.7% of the 1,570 votes cast by Millers fans.
