It was Richard Finney of Thorpe Hesley on the scoresheet in 1980. In 2022, it was the turn of Rawmarsh lad Ben Wiles to score a goal in a rare victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane. Wiles’ match-winning strike coupled with an all-action display at the top of Matt Taylor’s midfield earns him the Mattress Online Man of the Match award for Tuesday night’s South Yorkshire success in S2.
Wiles – once again stepping in as vice-captain with Richard Wood named among the substitutes – understood the importance of the assignment at Bramall Lane and led the Millers magnificently. To a man, Matt Taylor’s men were excellent.
It was Wiles though, the grandson of Blades legend Eddie Colquhoun who grabbed the headlines when he fired home the only goal of the game on 38 minutes, which would prove enough to win the battle of Bramall Lane for the Millers.
He threatened again as he looked to have a shout for a penalty when appearing to be bundled down as he ran through on goal, but that became immaterial as the Millers held strong for three precious Sky Bet Championship points to add to the loot bag for the short trip home with the local bragging rights.
Picking a four-man shortlist was near-on impossible for our social media team, but nominated alongside Wiles were Cameron Humphreys, Lee Peltier and Peter Kioso.
Of the 771 votes cast, Wiles landed 42.5% to win Tuesday night’s Mattress Online Man of the Match award.
