Saturday’s game was tailor made for a hero and we got a whole team of them.
The Millers knew they had to beat Gillingham to guarantee automatic promotion to the Sky Bet Championship at the first attempt and it was made clear that only a win would do with MK Dons thumping Plymouth Argyle 5-0 at Home Park.
Paul Warne’s men would have to show the spirit, fight and character to overcome a Gills side that were desperate for points of their own.
Thankfully, this team have it in bucketloads.
After creating the majority of the opportunities in the opening exchanges, Rarmani Edmonds-Green diverted Michael Ihiekwe’s header into the net to give the Millers a deserved lead.
Rotherham had to hold firm in the second period, as the Gills threw everything at them, but REG – as he is affectionately known – was an assured presence at the back, with his eye for a pass also helping the Millers engineer attacks.
Debut hero Georgie Kelly eventually wrapped up the win that would seal promotion in the final minute of normal time, as the Millers ran out 2-0 winners.
On a day where everyone impressed, it was REG who took the plaudits, with 46.7% of the 1,800 votes cast.
