Rotherham United can confirm that forward Michael Smith will leave the club upon the expiration of his current deal to join Sheffield Wednesday.

The 30-year-old joined the Millers in January 2018 from Bury and would go on to become an integral part of Paul Warne's attack following the return of Kieffer Moore to his parent club.

Smith turned out 210 times in all competitions in Rotherham United colours, most notably helping the club to three promotions and, more recently, the Papa John's trophy title.

The Wallsend-born attacker managed 61 goals during that time, hitting 25 of those in all competitions in 2021/22 - which marked his best goalscoring season to date.

The club has been persistent in its attempts to encourage the player to sign a new deal over the summer months, making a series of contract offers which we believe were befitting of Smith's value to the team, and, whilst we are disappointed to see him move on to pastures new, we would like to thank him for his enormous contribution over the past four-and-a-half years.
