OBITUARY | John Newey

Everyone at Rotherham United has been deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our former kitman and friend John Newey, who died yesterday following a short illness.

John was a larger-than-life character who became immediately popular when he joined the club as kitman back in the days at Millmoor and made friends throughout his time with the club.

He was one of many who enjoyed a number of years with the Millers as they rose from the old Division Three to what is now the Championship during Ronnie Moore and John Breckin’s tenure in charge and befriended our current management duo Paul Warne and Richie Barker during that period – both of whom have asked us to express condolences to John’s family and friends on their behalf.

John was a Millers fan and was as popular with his fellow supporters as he was with those that he worked with. He was a close friend of the legendary Derek Dalton and was known by many a Miller throughout the town and beyond.

He didn’t lose touch with his beloved Rotherham United after leaving his role and would become a regular at the club’s Nostalgia meetings in later life.

Everyone at the club would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to all of John’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

Rest in Peace.

Once a Miller, Always a Miller.
