Rotherham United Academy slipped to a home defeat to Scunthorpe United Under 18s on Saturday, in their latest Youth Alliance League fixture.

The Iron opened the scoring on 18 minutes, when Harrison Poulter intercepted a loose ball before running the length of the pitch to slot the ball past Burnett to give the home side the lead.

The second arrived on the half hour mark when Poulter teed up Nat Wallace to fire home a low shot into the corner.

Scunthorpe extended their lead on 34 minutes when Ben Franklin supported an attack from midfield and squared the ball to Poulter, who tapped in his second of the match.

The forward completed his hat-trick three minutes before the break, when he was played through by Wallace before finishing first time.

The Millers pushed for a way back in the second half and were rewarded for their early pressure when they were awarded a penalty after a tangle of legs in the area. Ciaran McGuckin stepped up to pull a goal back from the spot three minutes into the half.

The home side continued to press and scored again with just under half an hour remaining when Joel Holvey executed a sweetly struck volley to reduce the deficit further.

The Academy continued to probe during a much improved second half display, but despite sustained periods of pressure, it was the away side who held on for the victory.

ACADEMY | Burnett (Ford 45’); Greenhouse, Day, Jenkinson (Clark 76’), Holvey; Durose, Carroll, Warne, Nesbitt; McGuckin, Champion (Douglas 45’).

UNUSED | Hatton, Ayres.
