Upon the conclusion of the Women’s EURO 2022 competition which saw the Lionesses raise the trophy last night, everyone at Rotherham United would like to express our pride at the opportunity to play a part in what has proven to be the biggest tournament ever in the women’s game.
Having been selected by UEFA, the Millers’ home at AESSEAL New York Stadium hosted no fewer than four games in the marquee competition, providing a base for the French national team before welcoming Les Bleus and the Netherlands to South Yorkshire for a thrilling quarter final clash.
It was our privilege to be involved in what will be remembered as not only a highly-prestigious event, but also a history-making tournament for the nation, as England were crowned as champions of Europe on Sunday night.
It is our hope that the many supporters who came along to our AESSEAL New York Stadium home and saw superstars including Wendie Renard and Jackie Groenen have been inspired and we will now work hard alongside our Community Sports Trust to try to ensure that the legacy of the tournament is continued by youngsters in the town and beyond for many, many years to come.
We would like to thank those same fans who flocked from far and wide to support the women’s game with us and it was absolutely wonderful to see the town flooded in the colours of France, Italy, Belgium, Iceland and the Netherlands across the four dates of the fixtures here in Rotherham.
We have enjoyed 10 years of football at our AESSEAL New York Stadium and hosted a number of notable events here during that time, but none more prestigious than this summer’s major international tournament, which we feel has certainly put us on the football map in Europe.
The club were immensely proud to read the many positive comments from both Millers fans and the wider football community about our stadium which were made in the national media and across various social platforms.
Finally, we would like to thank UEFA and the English Football Association for allowing us the opportunity to be involved with Women’s EURO 2022, which will go down in the club’s history books and is a feat that we are incredibly honoured by.
