It had to be one of our boyhood Newcastle United fans that landed the PA Entertainments Man of the Match in collaboration with Terrace Threads for the game against Sunderland didn’t it?
In fairness, you could have drawn names out of a hat from Saturday’s emphatic Sky Bet League One win over the Black Cats for a deserved Man of the Match winner – such was the nature of the team performance – but it was Michael Smith who stole the headlines once again.
Netting a goal either side of half time and perhaps enjoying his second in front of the travelling contingent a little too much, Smith once again turned in a near-complete performance alongside an equally impressive Freddie Ladapo in attack.
Goals 11 and 12 also took Smith to the summit of the Sky Bet League One scoring charts.
In perhaps our toughest shortlist nominations yet, Smith was joined in the public vote by fellow Geordie Dan Barlaser, Ben Wiles and Freddie Ladapo but collected 49.1% of the 770 votes cast following the full time whistle.
