COMMUNITY | RUCST celebrate Football Welcomes month with an inclusive match at Parkgate Astro

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust celebrated Amnesty International’s ‘Football Welcomes’ month in April with an inclusive ‘United 4 Communities’ football match at Parkgate Astro.

Football Welcomes month celebrated the contribution that refugees and asylum seekers make to football within communities in the UK. Football can give people a sense of belonging, and this is incredibly important for those who have had to flee conflict and persecution.

RUCST organised a friendly 9v9 football match at Parkgate Astro, with the teams made up of our regular attendees to our United 4 Communities sessions, some RUCST staff and a few participants from our mental health sessions.

This friendly match enabled us to celebrate the diverse communities that can be brought together through the universal love of football within Rotherham.

As a club and a community, we all have a role to play in showing solidarity with people who have had to flee their homes and rebuild their lives in another country.

Inclusion manager Trudi Race said:

“For a long time now the Trust has supported refugees and asylum seekers through fitness and football related activities and we have witnessed first-hand the benefits that this can bring to the whole family, not just the players. Today has been a great event, promoting cohesion and inclusivity which is at the forefront of our values”.
