Richie Barker. Darren Garner.

And now, Freddie Ladapo.

If you’d not worked it out already, the above are the names of the players to have written their names into Rotherham United folklore with late, late winners for the Millers at Hillsborough.

It is no surprise therefore, that despite an all-round guns-out display from everyone in a Millers shirt last night, it is Ladapo who has been voted as the PA Entertainments Man of the Match for the win over Sheffield Wednesday.

A patched-up Millers side that was without skipper Richard Wood and a bench populated with three less names than permitted, turned in a colossal effort on Wednesday night to record a dramatic late win over the Owls, making history as the first Rotherham United team to ever do the double over our neighbours at S6.

Narrowing the shortlist down to four names after such a performance was not easy and there were plenty more potential candidates for this poll.

However, people will always remember that 96th minute, when Ladapo picked the ball up and charged for the Wednesday goal, to unleash a historic strike which beat Joe Wildsmith to give Warne’s men a precious three points.

1,958 votes were cast between the final whistle and the poll’s conclusion this morning and it was Ladapo who claimed the Man of the Match award by a distance, securing 54.6% of the vote.

Lewis Wing finished second with 31% while Angus MacDonald and Matt Crooks were also nominated.

Background:

This poll is supported by PA Entertainments who have been long-term supporters of the club and were hailed for their recent work which involved them lighting up the stadium in the colours of the NHS and more recently, with the image of a poppy for Armistice Day.

As part of the agreement, the club’s official Twitter account @OfficialRUFC will post an online poll after each Millers fixture allowing supporters to pick out their Man of the Match from the shortlist.

The PA Entertainments Man of the Match will be revealed on a Monday morning following a Saturday fixture or midday on the day after a midweek fixture.

The next opportunity for supporters to pick their Man of the Match will be on Saturday, when the Millers travel to the capital to take on Brentford.
