Key dates for the Millers to look out for in 2021/22 following this morning's fixture release...
Opening day
Rotherham United will kick off their 2021/22 Sky Bet League One campaign on home soil at AESSEAL New York Stadium as we welcome Ryan Lowe’s Plymouth Argyle on the opening day.
The Millers have been handed a home clash – their first since the 2016/17 season when we hosted Wolves in the Championship – on Saturday 7th August 2021.
South Yorkshire derbies
Paul Warne’s men will welcome both of our South Yorkshire neighbours to Rotherham in the early exchanges of the 2021/22 season with Sheffield Wednesday due to visit us on Saturday 21st August, while Doncaster Rovers are in town a week later on Saturday 28th August.
The reverse fixtures will see the Millers travel to the Keepmoat Stadium shortly after the turn of the year on Saturday 8th January, whilst a trip to Hillsborough is on the cards shortly before Valentine’s Day on Saturday 12th February.
Christmas and New Year
Other notable dates include a Boxing Day clash away at Accrington Stanley and a New Year’s Day meeting with newly-promoted Bolton Wanderers at AESSEAL New York Stadium.
The Millers will be in action at AESSEAL New York Stadium at least three times during December as they welcome Gillingham, Burton Albion and Lincoln City respectively, with an away trip to Cambridge United slotting in on the 18th of the month.
Carabao Cup
The Millers will learn of their first round Carabao Cup opponents when the draw is made today at 3:40pm live on Sky Sports.
The date for that opening round tie has been pencilled in during the week following the season opener against Plymouth Argyle (w/c Monday 9th August 2021).
Clubs will have the option – should they mutually agree to do so – to bring their first round fixtures forward to be played on Saturday 31st July or Sunday 1st August, which would make it the Millers’ first competitive action of the new season.
Should the Millers progress, Round Two of the competition is likely to take place towards the back end of the same month.
Wycombe Wanderers or Derby County?
Following THIS statement issued last night, it has been confirmed that the EFL have developed an interchangeable fixture list for Derby County and Wycombe Wanderers, while the disciplinary process which the Rams are currently subject to has been finalised.
The Millers are currently down to play Wycombe at home Tuesday 19th October and away on Saturday 12th March, but that could change depending on the outcome of the disciplinary proceedings involving Derby County.
Final day
Rotherham United will conclude their regular 2021/22 Sky Bet League One season with the epic trip to face Gillingham – currently managed by former Millers boss Steve Evans – on Saturday 30th April 2022.
As is always the case, a time will be agreed that will see all clubs across League One kick off this round of fixtures in unison.
Will any of these dates change?
Of course, all of our 2021/22 fixtures are subject to change, most notably in the instances in which we are picked for television broadcast.
Clubs do have a short period of time following the 9am fixture release to mutually agree any changes to their schedules.
