Rotherham United manager Paul Warne insists that his latest recruit Shane Ferguson is the perfect addition to his squad, following his arrival at AESSEAL New York Stadium on a two-year-deal.

The 30-year-old arrives in South Yorkshire following the expiration of his contract with Millwall and brings a wealth of experience both domestically and on the international front with Northern Ireland.

Ferguson’s ability to operate in a number of positions across the left-hand side appealed to the manager, who was delighted to get his man, after waiting patiently to secure his services over the summer.

“With his ability to play in three different positions, I felt like he was the perfect addition for us," Warne revealed.

"I did a Zoom call with him and I really liked him.

“He’s played internationally in some really big games and he had a fantastic time at Millwall, I think he’ll come in and provide great competition for everyone down that side of the pitch."

“Obviously we lost Trevor Clarke, who has decided to go to Bristol Rovers, so we needed a replacement and I wanted to strengthen our left side.

“Hammy met the player for us with the recruitment team and helped us get it all done, so I’m looking forward to meeting him once we get back to the training ground.

“I’ve been chasing him for a few weeks, we had to patient because I know he had a few other options, in the end I’m delighted that he’s decided to join us."

The Northern Ireland international is Warne’s first senior outfield addition of the 2021/22 summer window, with the manager hoping for more additions ahead of the new campaign.

Warne was quick to stress that work is bubbling away behind the scenes in regards to new recruits and believes that patience will be key to securing his desired targets.

“Fundamentally, we want to improve the squad and that is something we look to do that in every transfer window. Sometimes, to get the players you want, you have to wait a little bit longer."

“I expect us to get a few more bodies in over the next few weeks. I’ve been liaising with Rob – our Head of Recruitment – and he is working hard behind the scenes.

“We know that the season is upon us, but we won’t sign anyone just for the sake of it."
