VACANCY | Full-time Academy Sport Science Intern

We are looking to recruit a full-time Sport Science intern assistant to aid in our Academy programme for the 2021-2022 season.

Role Title: Sport Science Intern

Reporting to: Head of Academy Sports Science and Medicine and Academy Sports Scientist

Department: Rotherham United Football Club Academy

Location: Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park (Bawtry Road, S9 1UA)

Contract type: Unpaid (CPD opportunities are available) Academy is open 7 days a week, days, evenings and weekends

Closing date: 5pm,  3rd May 2021

Interview Date: Week commencing 10th May 2021


About the role

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Sports Science and Medicine and Academy Sports Scientist, you will be involved in planning and implementing a comprehensive programme for selected age groups. The programme will be specific to the age of the athletes, and relevant to the developing athlete. The successful applicant would ideally demonstrate an ability to practically apply evidence-based methods, and should demonstrate competency in developing programmes using these methods.  This role is suitable for year-in-industry placements only.   


Key Responsibilities

To plan and implement a Strength and Conditioning programme for selected age groups under the guidance of the Head of Sports Science and Medicine and Academy Sports Scientist.

To assist in implementing an integrated training programme with technical coaches for selected age groups.

To assist in the monitoring of completed sessions onto the Performance Management Application (PMA).

To educate players on the importance of relevant components of fitness and also the habits/lifestyle required to become an elite footballer.

To assist in the education of part time technical coaches on the importance and relevance of each targeted component of fitness.

To assist in the education of part time technical coaches on the correct movements of exercises included within the Strength and Conditioning session so they can assist with the sessions.

To liaise with the Head of Sports Science and Medicine and Academy Sports Scientist and wider members of the Multidisciplinary team where appropriate on the current status of players.


Person Specification


Currently enrolled on a Sport and Exercise Science Bachelor’s Degree programme or similar related discipline.

Be a team player and have the ability to use own initiative.

Effective communication and excellent interpersonal skills.

A keen interest in football and/or other sports.

Adaptable to the demands of the role and needs of the players.



Previous experience of delivering Strength and Conditioning sessions.

Previous experience of coaching within a team setting or with groups of athletes.

Experience of coaching youth athletes or within an Academy environment.
