POST-MATCH | It wasn't to be - Warne

Rotherham United boss Paul Warne reflected on his side’s display at home to AFC Wimbledon this afternoon.

The Millers came from behind to lead through goals from Matt Crooks and Freddie Ladapo but were denied all the points in the 93rd minute by a Wimbledon penalty.

“I thought we played really well today,” said Warne.

“I was pleased with them and I said to them at half-time, just keep doing that and be patient. I understand Wimbledon one-nil up away from home are not going to be in a rush to take anything, but don’t get involved in that too much, keep playing the way you’re playing and you’ll get chances to, hopefully, win the game.

“Obviously, we did create enough chances to win a game but, unfortunately today, it just wasn’t our day. In fairness, you win games when you’re not at your best and you don’t pick up points when you are at your best. It’s just one of them.

“I thought the lads were excellent and I really enjoy watching them play.

"The ref’s given it [the penalty] unfortunately for us. We could have had a good win to make a good weekend, but it doesn’t detract from the performance. We created loads of chances, I thought we were really good and I can’t ask for much more than that.

“They’re devastated in there. There wasn’t a lot said, I just told them how proud I was of the efforts they put in to win a football match, but it wasn’t to be. My only criticism of them was the ball came in, and they had had a warning five minutes before.

Whilst the Millers are still top of the league, Warne was pleased of the whole squad’s contribution which is keeping his side right in the hunt for promotion.

“It’s still tight at the top and we’ll have to pick up points when we’re not playing well,” he added.

“It wasn’t that today, because we’ve played well and didn’t get what we deserved.

“It was a great goal from Freddie. Having a good, strong squad’s a jot but having to keep them all happy isn’t so funny! The bench came and added something different. All the strikers have got different abilities and Freddie came on and took his goal really well. That late on in a home game, we really should be seeing it out – that’s the only disappointment for me.”
