Rotherham United are deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of our former player John Bettany, aged 81.

John, who played midfield, was from Rotherham having been born at Laughton Common and playing his early football at Thurcroft.

However, he only represented the Millers after five years at Huddersfield and then a successful spell with Barnsley where he clocked up well over 200 appearances in League and Cup.

He came to Rotherham from Oakwell at the start of the 1970/71 season but injury curtailed his career here midway through that season.

John made just 21 appearances. He started the first 16 league and Cup games of that season, scoring in 3-2 home win over Bury.

After a month out with injury, he returned but played only five more games - the last of them a 2-0 win at Doncaster Rovers on December 19th, 1970 - and he had to call time on his Millers career at the end of that season.

Everyone at Rotherham United would like to express our sincere condolences to John’s family at this time.

Once a Miller, always a Miller.
