Rotherham United are delighted to confirm that ‘W’ Italian Restaurant at Wickersley will be the main sponsors of the charity cricket match in aid of the Rotherham Hospice and Sunbeams, which will take place at Wickersley CC.

The club would like to issue a huge thank you to the local businesses who have already pledged their support to the event, which will see a number of the first team players and staff don the pads on Friday 5th July.

‘W’, which is a popular Italian restaurant located on Bawtry Road, are set to launch their new summer menu and will be inviting the Millers first team squad and staff to sample some of their new dishes prior to making their way across for the cricket match.

Club consultant John Breckin, who has been a key figure on the committee for organising the event alongside representatives from the Rotherham Hospice, their Sunbeams group and Wickersley CC, admitted he was delighted to see support flocking in from around the local area following the announcement of the game.

“I have been taken aback by the excitement and interest around the fundraiser since it was announced on the club website and the subsequent support from businesses around Rotherham,” he explained.

“Sponsors and supporters of the club new and old have been in touch with me to get involved and we are thrilled to have ‘W’ Italian on board, as well as some familiar names to the club in Eric Twigg Foods, PA Entertainments, Habbin Builders and Developers (which is a business belonging to former player Dick Habbin), House Hairdressers at Wickersley and Broadsword.

"It is always brilliant to see the community coming together for these fundraising events and it hasn't just been local businesses either. An example of that would be that our club photographer Jim Brailsford was on the phone to me as soon as the game was announced to ask if he could help on the night and it just reminded me how close the Rotherham Hospice is to the hearts of many in the town.

“With the fantastic backing of these businesses I am sure that it will be an evening to remember, but I must reiterate that you, the supporters, are the most important factor in the event being a success and us raising money for a fantastic charity in the Rotherham Hospice.

“Despite my previous involvement, I don’t think that I personally will be dusting off the bat for this one, but Paul Warne, Richie Barker and Matt Hamshaw have already promised me that they will be taking to the wicket for this fantastic cause.

“As I mentioned previously, it won’t just be the cricket game itself providing the entertainment on the day. We’ll have the entirety of the 2019/20 squad down at Wickersley Cricket Club and I know they will be only too happy to sign autographs and have photos taken with those in attendance.”
