Rob Scott talks to www.themillers.co.uk...
Rotherham United’s summer quest for new signings is unlikely to see the club recruit any talent from overseas, but new Head of Talent ID Rob Scott insists the club will not rule out tapping into the foreign market later in the season.
Scott is keen to broaden the Millers’ horizons on the recruitment front and has expressed a desire to unearth hidden gems from outside of the EFL but admits that the summer window may not present the club with the opportunity to bring in talent from abroad.
“I wouldn't say we're focusing too much energy outside of the UK at this present time but we're certainly looking at options in Scotland and we are looking further afield in Europe,” he explained.
“The problem we have outside of the UK is the time frames that we need to work to.
“Our recruitment team wasn't put together until the beginning of April and a lot of the quality players that we potentially could have brought in across those countries had already signed pre-contracts with other clubs.”
However, Scott insists that, should an opportunity present itself for the club to sign any players from off English shores, the recruitment team will carefully examine any potential additions, with watching the player in action first-hand imperative alongside all of the usual research.
“We want to be seeing targets live as well as on their technical videos,” he explained.
“It may be a little bit too soon to be looking further afield in this window and a big part of that is because we haven't had chance to look at any of those players live and that is something we feel strongly about.
“If it isn't in this window it is definitely something we will be putting more emphasis on towards January.”
