Rotherham United Reserves bagged their first victory of the season after a 2-1 success against Mansfield Town.

A young Millers side produced a solid performance to survive a late onslaught from the home team after goals from Joshua Kayode and Tyrone Lewthwaite had put Matt Hamshaw’s troops in a commanding positon, before a late Jordan Graham spot kick made for a lively finish.

Kayode, a first-year professional, netted in the first-half on his return from injury, whilst Lewthwaite continued his rich vein of form after netting on the international youth stage for Northern Ireland.

Kayode gave the Millers a first-half lead when he rose expertly to head in from a corner, leaving the ‘keeper no chance as he planted his effort into the top left corner.

Laurence Bilboe saved from Graham soon after, whilst Lewthwaite was unfortunate at the other end when he was penalised for a foul when well placed.

After the break the Millers doubled their advantage when Lewthwaite hit a fierce drive from just outside the area into the top right corner.

Mansfield put the Millers defence under pressure as they looked for a way back into the contest but Bilboe stood firm to preserve the advantage.

Late on Anderson was felled in the area with Graham converting from 12 yards, but the Millers held out for an impressive victory.

Team: Bilboe, Beeden, Onariase, Southern-Cooper, Hinds; McGinley, Carlton, Wiles, Gratton; Kayode, Lewthwaite.
