Over the last 3 months Rotherham United Community Sports Trust have worked with 5 Care Homes (Broadacres, Swallownest, Silverdale, West Melton lodge, and Whiston Hall) delivering weekly 1 hour sessions. The sessions included chairobics, boardgames, skittles, boccia, target throw and dominoes.
Alongside this each home was given craft materials to make a supporters flag for their home.
At the end of the 12 weeks each home brought 10 residents to New York Stadium to compete against the other homes in the Care Home Olympics.
The residents were put into mixed teams with residents from other homes and competed in target throw, boccia, skittles and dominoes, followed by afternoon tea and a tea dance.
Every participant received a certificate for attending with prizes being given out for the winners of each activity, best dancer and best dressed. Trophies were presented to the overall winning care home (west Melton Lodge) and for the best supporters flag (Swallownest)
The feedback from staff and residents was fantastic. The residents had great fun, enjoyed getting out and meeting new people and loved taking part in some competition.
All the homes who took part are eager to take part again in the future and we now have 18 homes wanting to get involved.
Bev Sawyer, manager of West Melton Lodge said ‘may I say all of our residents enjoyed the training and the day, most of which already want to sign up and do it all over again.
Carrie Davies, manager of Silverwood care home said ‘The day was great, organised and the afternoon tea and tea dance were brilliant.’
