Rotherham United Reserves maintained their winning start to the season after a 4-0 success over Doncaster Rovers in the Central League Cup.

Goals from Jerry Yates, Jonson Clarke-Harris, Anthony Forde and Mason Warren secured a well deserved comprehensive victory for the visitors at Cantley Park.

A strong Rotherham side also included the likes of Richard O’Donnell, Emmanuel Onariase, Joe Newell and Semi Ajayi, as Paul Warne gave opportunities to a number of players currently pushing for a first-team recall.

One of those is striker Yates and he almost opened the scoring early doors but he steered Clarke-Harris’ cross just over the bar.

He didn’t have to wait long for his next opportunity when his low effort from 20 yards cannoned both posts before crossing the line to give the Millers the lead.

Newell thought he’d doubled the advantage but after racing into the area his strike was cleared off the line by the outstretched leg of a Doncaster defender.

With 10 minutes remaining before the break the Millers deservedly added a second. Clarke-Harris was felled inside the area with the referee awarding a penalty, and the same player picked himself up off the floor to convert to the keeper’s right.

Four minutes into the second half the game was more or less sewn up. Warren produced some impressive footwork to weave his way through a number of challenges, before teeing up Forde who fired into the bottom corner.

Chances started to flow for the Millers with Newell playing in Alex Bray, but the winger’s effort was smothered by the ‘keeper. Bray then turned provider for Ben Wiles but his half-volley was powered over the bar.

The Millers added further gloss to the scoreline when Warren placed a delightful left-footed effort into the corner from 20 yards.

O’Donnell preserved the Millers’ clean sheet with a solid save at the end, as Rotherham capped an impressive overall performance.

Rotherham: O'Donnell; Emmanuel, Onariase, Ajayi (Hinds 66), Warren; Forde (Muskwe 66), Wiles, Newell (Murr 62), Bray; Yates, Clarke-Harris (Kayode 68).
