Warne confirmed that the Millers have long since been planning for life without Ward, and is actively pursuing a number of potential strikers.

"We have got David Ball," he told www.themillers.co.uk

"We have made offers elsewhere, and we are talking to potential recruits. We are looking to start the season with five strikers so that will give us some good competition for places. "From the last kick of last season we knew his future was elsewhere and that's why we have been proactive behind the scenes trying to get strikers into the club. We are continuing with that process.

"Once we got through January, I knew if the season didn't pan out the way we wanted it to, and there was another opportunity which was right for Danny and the club, then we wouldn't stand in his way. That's what has inevitably happened."
