RUFC team up with screening unit during Breast Cancer Awareness month
Rotherham United Football Club has teamed up with their local breast screening unit during October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month in a bid to encourage local women to join the fight against breast cancer and attend their screening appointments. The Millers are putting the emphasis on their male supporters to look after the women in their lives by making sure their mums, wives, sisters and partners are taking up their all-important breast screening appointments.
Danny Ward, The Millers number 9 said: “Quite often it is the women in our lives who look after us and make sure we are healthy, now it’s our turn to do something to look after them. Simply checking that your mum or your partner is attending their screening appointments every three years can make a big difference in catching cancer earlier.”
During October’s home match against Reading, the team will be warming up in campaign t-shirts displaying key messages ‘Breast screening saves lives’ and ‘Join the fight take up your invite’ as a reminder to fans of the important role screening plays in the detection of breast cancer.
Jamie Noble, Head of Community at Rotherham United said: “Breast cancer affects so many people which is why the club is eager to support this campaign. Women attending their breast screening appointment every 3 years from the age of 50 can help detect breast cancer early and ensure prompter treatment, which is why we are keen to ensure all our female fans and Rotherham women are taking up their invites.”
Approximately one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Early detection through screening offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery.
To show their support for Breast Cancer Awareness month, three team members of Rotherham United Football Club paid a visit to Rotherham Hospital’s breast screening unit.
During the visit the players met the screening team and learned about the important role breast screening plays in the fight against breast cancer.
Faye Drabble, Superintendent Radiographer at Rotherham Hospital said: “We are very grateful to the club for helping us reach out to the Rotherham community and promote the importance of attending breast screening appointments. Screening can pick up things that women might not be able to feel themselves which is why it is crucial women don’t ignore their invites.
“Women who have missed or need to rebook an appointment can contact us on 01709 424807 and we will happily schedule another appointment.”
Breast cancer screening is currently available every three years to women aged 50 to 70 years with some women being called up from the age of 47.
Early detection offers a better chance of successful treatment and full recovery. Join the fight and take up your invite.
