On Saturday 21st of May Rotherham United Community Sports Trusted hosted the Rotherham disability football festival at Sheffield Hallam University Sports Park to give children with disabilities a fun filled day, attendees included teams such as Bradford, Pinfold (Barnsley) and Doncaster who all represented their local teams.
The Festival attracted around 80 players who were then split into two age groups, U16’s and U12’s. Within the teams involved, there were players with several different impairments such as; Learning Difficulties, Cerebral Palsy and Hearing Impairments, many of which would not have had the opportunity to play for mainstream junior teams.
Even though these players all have impairments, this festival proves they can still play the sport they love, the passion and sportsmanship that was on display Saturday shows just how much it means to the Children, representing their beloved team which many have supported all their life’s was a fantastic experience for all involved.
Jack Pitchford (Disability Sports Coach) said “The festival was a great way of showing what disability football in Yorkshire is like, every player involved should be immensely proud of their performances today, we have witnessed some fantastic football performances which will only help the reputation of the sport get better and better.”
