Millers slip to defeat against Spireites...

Rotherham United slipped to a 3-0 home defeat to neighbours Chesterfield in the Final Third Development League.

Goals from former Miller Jordan Slew, Rai Simons and Jake Orrell secured a comfortable victory for the Spireites at the Millers’ training headquarters at Roundwood.

The Millers produced a side with a mixture of Academy scholars and professionals, which included goalkeeper Paddy Kenny and loanee’s Andrew Shinnie and Chris Burke.

It was the visitors who made all the early running and they took the lead through a familiar face. Former loanee Slew cut inside before firing in a low drive which beat the dive of Kenny.

Chesterfield doubled their advantage on 20 minutes when Simons beat Kenny with another low strike, this time from just inside the penalty area.

The Millers came closest through Shinnie when his thunderbolt strike beat ‘keeper Aaron Chapman but cannoned against the crossbar before falling to safety.

Emmanuel Ledesma was next to go close when his goalbound free-kick looked destined to be on target before taking a deflection which took it over the bar.

Just before the break, neat interplay between Burke and Shay Facey saw the latter fire a shot towards goal, but Chesterfield had Matt Young to thank after he cleared the ball off the line.

Shinnie continued to look threatening in the second half when he showed neat footwork to tee up Jerry Yates, but his goalbound effort was blocked.

The game was then put beyond doubt just past the half-hour mark when Orrell controlled the ball inside the area, before the curling a shot into the corner beyond Kenny.

The Millers hit the bar again before the final whistle when Yates smashed a shot against the upright from the angle.
