Millers slip to 2-0 defeat at the hands of Notts County...
A youthful Rotherham United reserve side marshalled by Academy Manager Garreth Barker slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Notts County in the Final Third Development League on Wednesday afternoon. With the Millers’ senior squad in action at Reading on Tuesday night, it was a young team that made the trip to Arnold Town’s Eagle Valley Stadium to take on the Magpies, where a double salvo from former Aston Villa man Graham Burke sealed the victory for the hosts.
At 23-years-old, Alex Cairns was amongst the elder statesmen of the team, as he took up position between the sticks with the likes of Academy prospects Darnelle Bailey-King and Ross Dickinson occupying the positions in front of him.
The hosts got off to the brightest of starts and just 120 seconds had elapsed when Burke fired the hosts ahead on a drizzly afternoon in Nottinghamshire.
The young attacker managed to dig the ball out of his feet prior to the two-minute mark to give the Magpies an early advantage with a powerful shot beyond Cairns.
On the half hour mark, Burke doubled his and Notts County’s tally for the day after escaping the attentions of a couple of Millers’ shirts before rocketing an effort in via the post.
Things settled down following the restart and the scores would remain the same until the final whistle despite a spirited showing from a young Millers side.
