Rotherham United’s Academy kicked off the new campaign with an opening day 2-1 victory over Grimsby Town.
An under-strength Millers side, which included a number of schoolboys, put in a impressive showing as they saw off the Mariners in the Youth Alliance curtain-raising game.
“It was always going to be a tough game because we were a little short on players as we await international clearance on a number of our new additions,” Garreth told www.themillers.co.uk.
“That would have been four players that would probably have been in the starting lineup, but credit to the other lads who came in. There were some really good performances and one or two took the opportunity that was presented to them.”
Goals from Trae Adeyemi and Moussa Diouf ensured the Millers maintained their impressive form from the back end of last season.
