Reserves 1 v 1 Grimsby - Report

Rotherham United ended the Final Third Development League season with a 1-1 draw against Grimsby Town at Roundwood.

The Millers took the lead just after the interval through Darnelle Bailey-King, but were pegged back at the death in the final game of the reserve campaign.

It was an inexperienced Millers side that took the field, with just striker Jerry Yates having first team experience.

The Millers should have been in front on 17 minutes when Brandon Potts won the ball before feeding the ball into Yates, who pulled it back for Kuda Muskwe but his shot was straight at Oakley Heath-Drury.

Soon after Fabian Bailey found Yates in the area but he fired wide when well placed to score.

It was Bailey’s turn next to go close but his rasping drive from range flashed just wide.

Before the break Potts went close with a free-kick, but his curling effort went just wide of the upright.

After Bailey-King was brought on at the interval, the substitute had an immediate impact. After Potts crossed to the back post, Bailey-King attacked the ball knocking it past Heath-Drury to give the Millers a deserved lead.

It was Bailey-King again who had the visitors on the back foot just short of the hour mark. After running at the Grimsby defence he released Potts who cut onto his right foot but his shot was saved by the ‘keeper.

On 65 minutes Kuda Muskwe showed great pace to get in behind the Mariners’ defence, but his low shot was saved.

Yates was the disappointed again when he worked himself into a one-on-one with Heath-Drury, before narrowly missing the target.

After Yates went close again, moments later a well-worked corner routine saw Potts pick out Saxton with a deep cross to the back post, but the defender’s goal-bound header was deflected behind for a corner.

Yates then carved open the defence once more with a driving run through the middle, before teeing up Potts whose bending effort was tipped away.

With one minute left on the clock, the visitors snatched a leveller with a well-taken volley at the near post following a Grimsby corner.
